Children's Books

One of the best classic talking animal books for children is The Wind in the Willows, starring a gentle and credulous mole who leaves his home one fine Spring day and discovers the river. Thereafter he meets the most delightful characters in the adventurous Water Rat, the friendly Otter, the irrepressible Toad, and the reclusive Badger. Through several chapters, they have various adventures in and around the river, many of these instigated by Toad and his latest loves, be they boating, gypsy carts, or motor car driving. It is in fact this last sport which leads to the main plot of the latter half, as Toad finds himself in a whole lot of trouble from which he cannot quite extract himself without the help of his good friends, their patience already worn quite thin. Can Toad be changed? What will his home be like when he returns? ****** has written a delightful novel in which the characters and the setting (almost a character of itself) come through in grand poetic style that fascinates children and adults alike. The chapters are written such that they can be read one at a time without disturbing the flow of the story, so this story is ideal for reading to or with young children.
